Nick Grice’s solo journey through Tanzania, including Arusha and Zanzibar: wildlife, islands, and a birthday spent exactly the way he wanted.
Some birthdays call for a party. Nick Grice’s called for a lion under an acacia tree, a boat at sunset off the coast of Zanzibar, and a journey spent almost entirely on his own terms.
“I’ve always been drawn to experiences that push me outside of my comfort zone and allow me to see the world from a different perspective,” Nick said. “East Africa had been on my bucket list for years because of its incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultures. Celebrating my birthday there felt like the perfect opportunity to challenge myself and experience something truly unforgettable.”
In September 2026, Nick traveled from Arusha on mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar, combining wildlife encounters with time in Stone Town, island excursions, and a birthday sunset cruise.

Arusha: Where It Got Real
Nick landed at Kilimanjaro International Airport and settled into the Gran Meliá Arusha, a five-star hotel with views of Mount Meru.
The journey felt real as soon as he arrived. “The trip felt real the moment I stepped off the plane at Mt Kilimanjaro airport and meeting my guide. Looking out at a landscape I had only seen in photographs was a surreal moment. I remember thinking, ‘I’m actually here.’”
Thoughtful planning helped Nick arrive with confidence. “Majestic Dream Vacations handled every detail with professionalism and care,” Nick said. “From answering questions to coordinating logistics and designing an itinerary that matched my interests, they made the planning process stress-free and gave me confidence before I ever boarded the plane.”
Wildlife Day
During his stay in Arusha, Nick visited Serval Wildlife near Kilimanjaro for guided animal encounters. The visit offered a different kind of wildlife experience from a national park game drive.
Nick at Serval Wildlife
Traveling solo changed how Nick experienced the day. “It was surprisingly rewarding,” he said. “Being alone allowed me to completely absorb every moment. Instead of worrying about a schedule or conversation, I found myself fully engaged in the sights, sounds, and beauty surrounding me.”
Solo travel gives you room to follow your interests. Thoughtful planning and local guides help coordinate the details, so you can focus on the experience.
MDV Travel Tip
Arusha to Zanzibar
From Arusha, Nick flew to Zanzibar and checked into The Z Hotel, a boutique beachfront property in Nungwi on the island’s northern coast. Time by the water gave him room to shift the pace of the trip.

That shift was intentional, and it’s the part of solo travel Nick comes back to most. “Solo travel gives me the freedom to fully immerse myself in the experience,” he said. “I could move at my own pace, take time to reflect, and focus on the things that interested me most. It also pushed me to be more present and open to meeting new people along the way.”
And contrary to what people sometimes assume about traveling alone, it didn’t mean traveling in isolation. “Traveling solo naturally opened up conversations,” Nick said. “I found people were more likely to approach me, and I was more willing to strike up conversations in a few cases, but also allowed me to be alone in my thoughts.”
Islands, Sand, and Stone Town
One day brought Nick to Changuu, known as Prison Island, and the Nakupenda Sandbank, followed by a walk through Stone Town. The itinerary balanced guided excursions with time to enjoy Zanzibar at his own pace.
Time with local guides became one of Nick’s favorite parts of the journey. “One of my favorite memories was spending time with local guides and learning about their lives, traditions, and taking a sunset cruise on my birthday. Those conversations and experience added a deeper layer to the trip and helped me appreciate East Africa beyond the trip itself.”

The Birthday
The itinerary left Nick a free day in Nungwi. On his birthday, he chose a sunset cruise off Zanzibar’s coast.

Alone with that kind of quiet, Nick found something he didn’t expect to be the headline of the trip. “I learned that solitude can be incredibly rewarding,” he said. “When you’re not distracted by the demands of everyday life, you gain clarity, perspective, and a greater appreciation for the present moment.”
Back to Stone Town, and Home
Before heading to the airport, Nick returned to Stone Town and visited a spice farm, adding another perspective on Zanzibar to the journey.

Asked what made the trip feel like his own, Nick pointed to the planning: “The personalization. Every part of the trip felt intentional and aligned with what I wanted to experience. I didn’t feel like I was following a generic tour, it felt like the journey was created specifically for me.”
What He Brought Home
To anyone circling a solo trip the way he once was, hesitant but curious, his advice is direct: “Don’t let fear stop you from pursuing a dream. Prepare thoroughly, work with trusted travel professionals, stay open-minded, and embrace the unknown. The confidence you gain from taking that first step is worth it.”
Asked to sum up the journey in three words, Nick chose: “Transformative. Inspiring. Unforgettable.”
